The Conscious Investor

Ep494 What the Gurus Forget

Julie Holly

Can the wisdom of investment gurus truly set you on the path to financial freedom, or is there more to the story? Join us as we dissect the promises and pitfalls of advice from financial experts, sparked by a candid chat with a fellow investor. We'll uncover the often-missed realities that individuals face when diving into new ventures like investing or changing careers. Plus, we'll explore how community support and listener feedback play a pivotal role in the growth of our podcast. And just for fun, I'll share my game-changing experience with a clothing rental service that's turned shopping on its head.

Transitioning from financial wisdom to personal growth, we reflect on the journey of mastering any skill through patience and consistent effort. Drawing from my experiences teaching my kids to mountain bike, you'll hear about the unrealistic expectations of immediate mastery and how true expertise is cultivated over time. Whether it's mountain biking, weightlifting, or business acumen, we'll explore the parallels between physical and mental skills and the irreplaceable value of knowledgeable mentors. Tune in to understand why the road to mastery is paved with persistence and the guidance of those who've walked it before.

Speaker 1:

Today I want to talk about what the gurus forget, and this conversation is inspired directly by a conversation I had with an investing friend of mine earlier this afternoon, and normally I don't simply jump in and record podcast episodes, but this is a recurring concept the way we can have gurus, people that present themselves and have courses and have all these options for us to integrate into their ecosystem, and they promise that if we do what they say, it's going to work out well. And there are some things that these gurus actually have forgotten. And that's what I want to dive into today, because I interact and engage with a lot of people that are at the precipice of change in their life that might be making their first or next investment, it might be transitioning careers, it might be simply evolving internally so that they can see the world in a new way, and all of these things, all of this, has a direct implication to this discrepancy between what the gurus say and where we are, and that's what I want to talk about today. You know, before we dive in, I just want to give a super shout out Matt Wines, who recently joined a mastermind that I'm a part of and love that group and love the people that are attracted into that community. Thank you so much. He left an amazing review over on the Conscious Investor podcast, apple podcasts. He said fuel the tank, five stars. Thanks, matt.

Speaker 1:

Julie, julie's podcast helps me as a real estate investor to keep my mind right. She hits right at some core issues and helps me put in perspective what I don't need to worry about or let get me down. Also, awesome guests who help me learn. Thanks so much, matt, for taking time to do that. I'm not sure what's going on over on Apple reviews and Apple podcasts, but things are always shifting over there, and so when you take time to leave an honest rating and review, it helps the show reach more people. And guess what? This show should be reaching more people, but I can't do it without your support. So if you take time to do that, you know, if this is your first episode, don't feel like you need to do that, but if you've been listening and you haven't left a rating or review on Apple podcasts, please take a moment to do that. I'd greatly, tremendously, appreciate it.

Speaker 1:

I also want to share about something that I recently discovered. Don't worry, I'm going to get into the gurus, but I am so, so, so excited. One of my really good investing friends. She turned me on to this product called Nuuly N-U-U-L-Y, like it's kind of new, it's Nuuly, it's Nuuly-ish, right.

Speaker 1:

The reality is is that I hate shopping. I don't like going through clothes and I find myself absolutely overwhelmed, having to go through shop after shop only to end up empty-handed because the one thing I may have found isn't available in my size. And I also feel a bit lost because I've changed a lot as a person and I'm really not sure what my current style is. So I don't even know where to shop, and that's why I absolutely love, love, love Nuuly. They have the best selection of clothes from my favorite brands and designers, with styles I can wear around the house at my new office at events. I love that I can grab my favorites from Anthropologie and I even love that I can try out new styles without feeling the need to purge my closet. But they're not giving me anything for promoting this. I'm just so excited for the solution.

Speaker 1:

In my life, everything comes direct to my doorstep in a sustainable cloth package. It actually reminds me of a lightweight suitcase and has a return label included. And their customer service is absolutely the best, because, let me tell you, one time I realized I forgot to send a shirt back and I simply opened the app, chatted with a newly representative and, bam, we had a solution in place. And this isn't like Stitch Fix or other subscriptions, where you have to pay a styling fee and you need to buy clothes. This is actually like a rental service and it's also not like Rent the Runway, which I looked at, which has a lot of couture clothes that really were not my style. These are actually clothes that I want to wear, clothes that make me feel great, and you can rent these clothes. It only cost me $99 a month. I rented a pair of overalls recently. I loved them so much maybe because of all the compliments I kept getting from them I bought them at a really, really deep discount.

Speaker 1:

So I wanna encourage you if you're going through that transition, if you don't feel like you wanna add to your closet and you don't wanna have to buy a bunch of clothes, but you want to add some new pieces in newly is absolutely amazing. A hundred dollars a month. I can pick up five or six items and I can wear them for an entire month and then I can ship them back. I don't have to worry about cleaning them. I don't have to worry about anything comes in this beautiful package. So if you are experiencing any of that transition, if you're not enjoying shopping, or maybe you just want to bring in some beautiful pieces of clothing into your wardrobe because maybe you like me, it's hard to find those around where you live. Then you want to head over and check out newly. Today, in-l-y, you can save $30 off your first order with the promo code Julie4822. J-u-l-i-e 4822.

Speaker 1:

The cool thing is that you don't sign a year-long contract or anything like that. You can pause it, you can cancel it at any single time, no styling fees. You can use the service as you want it and if you love it and you want it in your forever closet like I did with those overalls I got to buy them and you can too. At a deep discount, you can have fun and discover new styles. I've been trying out some fun pieces and it's been fun to like have this around the house and to show people, show my family like what do you think of this? And get their feedback. It's also helping me discover parts of me that I did not know I had inside of me little personality pieces. You can head over to newlycom N? U U L? Ycomcom or you can download the app today, remember, you can save $30 off your first order if you use promo code JULIE4822.

Speaker 1:

Now, conscious Investor, you know that I don't typically promote products like this. But I'm not even exaggerating when I say that I believe that this is one of the single best solutions in my life, and I know that even if you're one of my amazing gentlemen, conscious Investors, you probably have a female in your life that has that same pain point that I have about fashion and such. So I hope that you pass that along, because everyone I've exposed this to they have been so grateful that I have shared this with them. Okay, we have got to get into what the gurus are forgetting, and it's by no fault of their own, fault of their own. You know, when we come to a position of not just proficiency, but when we become the expert at something, we really have this massive distance between where we were and who we were and who we've become and where we are. We've developed a skill set and we've grown into that and we forget. And so, by no fault of their own, I am not faulting gurus, and I'm certain that I fall into this category in many regards, in fact, let's just go down a little memory lane.

Speaker 1:

Take my kids mountain biking, as you know, and mountain biking season is upon us, and so we will have more mountain biking stories. But as we have ventured into this mountain biking season, I noticed that my posture has shifted, meaning my attitude has shifted towards my kids. Years ago, when I started taking them on the trails that was five, six years ago I expected a lot of them. In fact, I expected my kids to be able to ride and navigate the trails like I had. I figure they're young, they're healthy, they're active why can't they? And yet that expectation really put a lot of pain into our lives. I was like a drill sergeant. I would holler at them like, come on, you can do it. And the encouragement it faded very quickly from encouragement into frustration because of my expectation of them. I forgot that I had been writing for a longer period of time than my kids. I forgot that I had people just pouring into me, people pointing out and developing and literally coaching me on my skills so that I could improve and become a better writer. And I forgot how much time I put in on the trail hours of time, miles and miles and miles of time on the trail. And so I expected my kids to be able to do everything that I was doing, but they didn't have the time.

Speaker 1:

So you see, it's easy Once we figure something out, it's easy, right, like it just becomes easy. But we have to figure it out. And so that's the first thing that a lot of times we forget. When we become experts at something or when we develop a high level of proficiency, we forget that we have reps and we have to put in the reps in order for us to be able to have the output that we want, the outcome that we want. So it's important that we are always aware that to become experts, we have to put in the time, those daily disciplines, the little drips, the consistent drops to push us further and further and further, and every single one of those reps is giving and providing imperative feedback for us, and that feedback allows us to make those micro adjustments that we're otherwise completely unaware of. You see, a lot of times, if we look at let's go to the investing space, we'll shift from biking to investing. A lot of times we have these gurus and they're selling their coaching programs and they have it all figured out and this is all you need to do coaching programs, and they have it all figured out and this is all you need to do.

Speaker 1:

You can bypass and shorten and collapse your learning curve. You can collapse the timelines and you can jump in and get started today and you can go from being a total rookie, a total beginner, into, like, massive expert in just this little bit of time, because you're going to borrow their knowledge and expertise, their experience. But you see, this actually doesn't work. So I am going to be mixing metaphors, but you're used to that. Conscious investor. But if I'm a guru and I'm suggesting to you that you can borrow my wisdom, knowledge, expertise and you can collapse your timelines, and yet let's just move. We're going to combine some.

Speaker 1:

If I'm at the gym and I'm saying, hey, borrow my body, you can go. You can go bench that, you know, 250 pounds, no problem. Like, I'll tell you, this is how your body needs to be. This is a position you need to be in. Dig your feet in, you know, on the ground, you know, tighten your core, and really I could tell you all of that. But unless you have actually been putting in the time, conscious investor, are you going to be able to bench the two 50? Now, I know, I know, conscious investor, you're probably benching like 500. Okay, remember that. I think I'm at maybe a hundred, maybe 125, and I'm cool with that.

Speaker 1:

But the reality is is that when we talk about the output of skills and a lot of times we we think that there's a difference between a physical skill and a mental skill or, you know, a business type skill and the reality is, is that we can be reminded by that physical skill of, you know, weightlifting or mountain biking or whatever it is. It's built over time and there's no shortcut to that. And the same is true of any skill that we want to develop. If we want to become experts at something, it comes over time. We can't borrow somebody's expertise and own it as our own. Can we learn from them? Can we grow from them?

Speaker 1:

Yes, earlier today I was talking with one of my favorite investors. I don't think that you've heard me talk about Financial Sherpa for a while. I was so excited. I was talking with Financial Sherpa and just catching up and we're talking about investing and talking about deals and opportunities and it was just great to catch up. Overall, I've known financial Sherpa for years now and that person has been an influence in my life, a consistent influence, one of those guiding light type influences in my life, and so and it shows, it for sure shows.

Speaker 1:

So we need the reps and we need, we need the gurus, we need the wisdom, knowledge, expertise. We need all of that around us so that we can have that extra support. That's part of the feedback loop. Right, and remember, we either learn or we win, and it's easier to win and it's easier to learn when we have experts around us who are willing to give us that feedback and when we're present and aware with ourselves so that we can actually be aware. Well, maybe I need to shift my body position if I'm doing something physical or if I'm doing something within my business. Maybe I need to go reread this part of this book and understand that philosophy better. Maybe I need to right pick up the phone or maybe I just need to practice more, sample more.

Speaker 1:

So we have our reps, we have our feedback loop and that leads us into our learning. That learning is going to produce the outcome that we want. But we have to play in that sandbox over and over and over again. And this is why I am highly skeptical when I hear people say I went from nothing to this massive and it's a massive leap. Yes, it does happen, but more than likely, those people have had those particular gurus have probably had a lot of experience and a lot of success in other arenas. It's not that they just got that moment and that was their first time on the turf. They've been on the turf but now they're applying everything they learned from another arena into this one, and so we want to be sure that we're not comparing ourselves to the gurus and that we're not drinking the Kool-Aid that we're going to go from nothing to a kajillion units, a kajillion doors, a kajillion dollars like and I'm exaggerating, but I see this happen over and over and over again and we don't want to be prey, we don't want to be susceptible to that, but we can understand who aligns with us.

Speaker 1:

Actually, when I read that review earlier from Matt Weins and I mentioned, we're in the same mastermind together. It's a wonderful mastermind. It's a great ecosystem, and when I chose to join that ecosystem years ago, it was because there was a greater alignment. It wasn't the promise that, oh, in the next 90 days I'm going to do X, y, z. It was. I'm going to have the right people around me and I'm going to have the right support and people who are aligned philosophically with me that are going to. We're going to be able to move in advance, forward together. In fact, most of my partnerships have stemmed from within that mastermind.

Speaker 1:

And I'm saying this because I want you to know, conscious investor, that I'm not any of these programs, but I do want us to all walk with an awareness that there isn't a way to totally collapse the timelines. Now can we address some internal issues? Can that help collapse timelines? Yeah, a lot of us have mental between our head, heart, our gut. We have some type of blockage in our thinking, in our understanding, in our intuition that just needs to be adjusted, kind of like going to a chiropractor and getting adjusted. It really helps out very quickly and so we can have instances like that. But we want to be aware that the gap in the game, we want to be aware that we have reps. With those reps we get our feedback, we get our learning, we're able to create an outcome and from there we're able to spiral up our success.

Speaker 1:

Conscious investor, I'm so excited for you. You have a great head on your shoulders, you're walking with wisdom, you're walking with awareness, you're being self-aware, which is incredibly important, especially when we're striving for success in all areas of our life. So I want to encourage you to take time, think about this and don't leave this here. Shoot this podcast episode over to a friend. Grab a cup of coffee, glass of wine, a pint whatever it is, sit outside, however it is, but take this concept and go deeper, because there's so much more to this concept and that's what's so exciting is that our concepts can start here, in this moment, on this episode, but they can expand it to really rich conversations and those conversations are going to help you and others level up Conscious Investor. I appreciate you.
